Competitions 2017 Picture Book Competition for Primary Schools Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School prize giving ceremony

Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School prize giving ceremony

In Term 4 we were privileged to have NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Mark Coure MP present the prizes to Sophia Brown and Tiffany Jie from Year 5 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School, Greystanes NSW. Sophia and Tiffany won the national TrackSAFE Education 2017 Picture Book Competition (year 4/5/6 category) by writing and illustrating a book about a safe train journey.

Mr Coure said how impressed he was with the high quality of the story and illustrations, in particular how the characters not only demonstrate how they can be safe on and near a train, but also show respect and etiquette when on the train by standing up for people who need a seat more; walking safely across the pedestrian crossing and near the road; and travelling safely on the bus.

Sophia and Tiffany’s proud parents watched on proudly as Mr Coure presented them each with $300 in vouchers and a copy of their book. They also won a writing and illustration workshop for their class with author Marie Alafaci and Illustrator Shane McG; their book published and distributed to 8 local libraries and the Australian National Library in Canberra; and their book made into an e-book, which will be available to download for free via our website soon.

Their delighted teacher, Miss Clancy worked tirelessly to help her students enter the competition, and for her efforts she won a Nespresso coffee machine and pods up to the value of $500, as well as a copy of Sophia and Tiffany’s book. Their school principal Mr Hopley also received a $500 book voucher for the library, and a copy of the winning book.

We could not have run this competition without the generous donation from our competition sponsor, John Holland CRN, and their CEO Neil Gleeson presented all 13 participants from OLQP Primary with certificates of participation.

Thank you to Parliamentary Secretary Mr Mark Coure MP and Neil Gleeson for presenting the prizes and certificates. Thanks also to everyone who came along to assembly to celebrate the amazing achievements of the students and staff from this wonderful school.

Congratulations Sophia and Tiffany on creating a magnificent picture book for young children to learn how to be safe around trains, roads and public transport. What a legacy you have created, all at the age of 11!
